Gynecology is the medical practice dealing with the health of the female reproductive systems vulva, vagina, uterus and ovaries. The vulva includes mons veneris, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibule and conventionally the perineum. The external genital organs start developing almost simultaneously with the development of the internal genital organs. Both the motor and sensory part of the somatic supply to the pelvic organs is through pudendal nerve, ilio-inguinal nerve, genital branch of genitofemoral nerve and posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh. Developmental anomalies of the external genitalia along with ambiguity of sex are usually genetic in origin. Major anatomic defect of the genital tract is usually associated with normal gonadal function and urinary tract abnormalities. The chapter also deals with the aspects of puberty, menopause, abnormalities related to the reproductive systems, menstruation, sexually transmitted infections, pelvic infection, medical examination of the patient, different methods used in diagnosis, contraception and current topics in gynecology.
